Phoenix is an obscure constellation representing the mythical bird which rises periodically from its own ashes. The constellation is northwest of Achernar (alpha Eridani).

Alpha Phoenicis is the brightest star in this obscure constellation, due west of the southern tip of Eridanus. Alpha Phoenicis is easiest found by drawing a line between Fomalhaut and Achernar. Midway along this line and just to the east is found alpha Phoenicis.

Zeta Phoenicis is perhaps the most interesting object in this obscure constellation, a triple system which is only suitable for medium to large telescopes. Zeta Phoenicis is in the same field as Achernar, which makes it a convenient star for beginning to investigate this constellation.
