54 Hydrae is a fine binary of contrasting colours, yellow and purple, easily resolved in small telescopes. The two stars have visual magnitudes of 5.2 and 7.3.
To find the binary, begin at pi Hydrae then place 51 Hya at the right edge of your glasses. You'll find 54 Hya at the top of a line of stars which lead down to 58, which some cartographers consider to be the true end of the Hydra's tail: binoculars.
