Johann Bayer wished to pay homage to the American Indian, so he included this representation in his 1603 star catalogue. Indus is a constellation of the Southern Hemisphere southwest of Sagittarius.
Alpha Indi is an orange giant, the brightest star in this Southern Hemisphere constellation of 3rd- and 4th-magnitude stars. Alpha Indi is found ten degrees north of Peacock. Most of the constellation's other stars are found in the vicinity of -- or to the east of -- Peacock. Beta Indi is in the same field.
