M27 (NGC 6853)

M27 (NGC 6853) is a large planetary nebula, called the Dumbbell Nebula because of its curious shape. It covers an apparent area of a quarter of the full moon but is quite faint in binoculars.

The nebula is found in the same field as 13 Vulpeculae: binoculars.

13 Vulpeculae is one binocular field to the east of alpha.

You may try finding the nebula first with the naked eye by forming a rectangle with the three bright Cygnus stars in the region, beta, gamma, and epsilon. The nebula forms a near-perfect rectangle with these three, as the southwest corner of such a rectangle.
