NGC 2477

NGC 2477 deserves to be called a Messier object. This globular cluster of about 300 stars is a fine sight in the same field of view as zeta Puppis: binoculars.

You'll also note that the cluster sits roughly mid-way between zeta and another cluster, NGC 2541, which also bears examination.

This latter cluster, much closer at about 1500-1700 light years, has about fifty stars, most noticeably an orange supergiant at the centre, "c" Puppis.
